Where To Put The Dumpster You Rented

When you are undertaking a home remodeling project, you want to have a dumpster ready for all the waste that is generated. Your home's trash cans won't have enough room for everything you're going to remove and trim. But then you have another issue: where to put the dumpster. Not only will it be big — even small dumpsters are rather hefty — but it will also be heavy when empty, and even heavier when it's full. You'll likely need to know where you're putting the dumpster before you get a permit to have one, so you need to start looking now at places where it can go.

Someplace Flat and Paved

The best place for a dumpster is someplace flat and paved. Pavement supports the weight of the dumpster; unpaved ground will also support the weight in general, but the dumpster can leave divots where the pressure from all that weight compacted the ground. And wherever you put it has to be level or generally level; a very slight slope might be OK, but a hilly area is not appropriate. For example, if your driveway is low-sloped and paved, that could be a good place if the driveway is long enough.

What About the Street?

You could consider the street in front of your home. However, if you live in an area controlled by an HOA, you might not be allowed to put the dumpster there. This is going to vary, so go ahead and ask, of course, but be prepared to try to find another place for the dumpster if the HOA says no. If your home has a steep driveway and no other empty spaces in front where the dumpster could go, you could have a better chance of having the HOA grant permission (since they can see that you really can't place it elsewhere).

If You Have to Put It on a Lawn

If the worst happens and you have to place the dumpster on your lawn, do three things. One, place something like wood panels over the lawn where the dumpster will go; this will serve as a sort of paving-like layer. Two, make sure the dumpster isn't sitting on roots. Three, speak with a sprinkler and irrigation company if you have sprinklers in your lawn. You want to be sure the weight of the dumpster won't break one of the lines.

You're not the only one to ever face this problem. You might want to ask a dumpster rental company if they can help you evaluate different areas to see which is best for the dumpster.
